About Acupressure and Acupuncture

Acupressure, like its Chinese counterpart acupuncture, is based on…

The principle is that to stay healthy, a person should maintain a healthy balance and flow of energy (called “qi” or “chi” in Chinese). While an acupuncturist inserts thin needles at energy points in the body to stimulate them and correct the flow of chi, an acupressure practitioner applies pressure on areas to achieve similar results. A licensed practitioner uses fingers, palms, elbows, feet, or other objects to apply pressure on specific points related to various parts of the body, each sitting on an energy channel known as a meridian. If energy, or chi, becomes blocked along any of these pathways, various symptoms and health concerns may arise.

Although acupuncture needles are essentially painless, some people may prefer this non-invasive option. It may be hard to believe that simple pressure application can help with your condition, but researchers in Taiwan have found it more effective in relieving lower back pain compared to physical therapy (exercise, spinal manipulation, heat therapy, and electrical stimulation). Additional studies on acupressure have also shown promising results for other health concerns.

Beyond back issues, acupressure is also used to:
  • Treats headaches, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and post-operative pain while reducing anxiety, stress, and depression.
  • Provide relief to asthma and allergy patients.
  • Reduce the symptoms of unsettled stomach and irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Relieve nausea, especially during surgery or chemotherapy.
  • Boost your immune system
  • Easier and faster labor

Who Is Acupressure For?

Many people receive acupressure without hesitation, but it is not for everyone. If you have any of the following conditions, talk to your doctor about treatment before your first session.

  • Heart illness.
  • uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Blood coagulation disorders, such as hemophilia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Recently fractured bones.
  • Pregnancy
  • Cancer (Acupressure may alleviate the pain and nausea associated with cancer and chemotherapy, but the American Cancer Society cautions that it may not be appropriate for all cancer patients.)
